Cosmopolitan - Cosmic - Artistic
The works of art on the façade of the Höllerwirt in Altmünster say it: Surrounded by contemporary art, former award-winning chef Markus Höller is serving an exquisite 6-course menu in his old home tavern under the title “Cosmopolitan Dinner”.
The core of the exhibition is a comprehensive exhibition of the work of the artist who lives in Upper Austria Josef Karl, compiled from his projects FemaleIDs, Beauty Conservation, HiDE and iDNA. The cover of the retrospective adorns the outer wall and can be admired as an original inside: “IDNA-Reinholdmessner-1944".
Joseph Karl: Art - unique - unique - human
This formula describes the work of the artist born in 1974 and based in the Salzkammergut region. Only a passport or identity card confers official identity, enables geographical location, forms the basis for upcoming life decisions and official interventions, and is ultimately decisive for existence as an individual in modern society. Josef Karl addresses this problem, which is a recurring thread throughout his work. Karl is concerned with nothing less than the preservation of the individual in a work of art. To do this, he integrates expired ID cards and genetic material such as hair, but also objects touched by those portrayed, into his works. On the one hand, his paintings and objects prove to be mementos of Memento Mori, in that they answer the question of the whereabouts of people in mass society with the individualized work of art, and on the other hand, they are containers in the tradition of reliquaries whose content was suitable to authenticate the existence of the saint over time.
Other works in this extraordinary exhibition are by Viennese artists Philip Müller and Desiree Mabrier.
Markus Höller delivers the culinary component from Wednesday to Saturday from 18:00 with a six-course menu (cost: 99 euros/person) and the à la carte “Dim Sum Garden” offer from Shanghai Restaurant every Sunday from 16:00.

This unique pop-up event about art and cuisine is organized by Josef Karl and Markus Höller, although not in cooperation with the European Capital of Culture 2024 Bad Ischl Salzkammergut, but entirely in their spirit. That is why the tavern laboratory is also happy to pass on this recommendation.
